Folks I am after a small Bull Nose type shoulder plane. Something with a detachable nose so it will work as a chisel plane when required. I have been looking at the Record 77a and the Stanley 90. Which do you guys feel is the best of these 2 and, what else is there around that you would recommend to do the same job. (Hoping Todd Stock will advise here) I do not want anything new, I am not concerned about atheistic appeal or collectability, only function. So, if anyone has something they think will fit the bill and they no longer need it for their own use, please PM me. Cheers all Kim |

I use the stanley 311, because it so handy for all the jobs, a shoulder plane a bullnose and a chisel, preston used to make them and clifton still do. |

Once again-Lee Valley:Veritas comes to mind. I have one and have never used it, but it is a very well made tool. May I be so bold as to ask where you fellows use/want to use this? And if you really want just a chisel plane, LV has a nifty plane body that clamps your favorite chisel, too. MT |

Mike these planes can be handy when you need to extend or widen a rebate in some existing framing or other joinery work. Also good for cleaning up a tenon and Jonathan Kinkead ("Build your own Acoustic Guitar") uses a 90 to bring the back of the headstock down to thickness for fitting the machines (no volute). Over the years, there have been odd times when I have thought "I could really use a bullnose/chisel shoulder plane right about now", not too often, but they do come up. I have always found a work round but now I am ready to just get the tool for the job even if it sits idle most of the time. Cheers Kim |

I use my Stanley #93 rabbet plane whenever I need a chisel plane. The toe section of the plane can be removed, effectively turning it into a chislel plane. Stanley #93 (scroll down) It is a nice plane, I use it for cleaning up shoulders on tenons and other light tasks. I have not found any uses for it in guitar building however. |

I do remember one recent lutherie use that I made of my shoulder plane. It was for cutting a clean edge on a through-neck electric bass at the end of the fingerboard, where the body stepped down a smidge from the plane of the neck under the fingerboard. (Moll plans from MIMF). THe bullnose would have worked just as well for this. At any rate, I think the Veritas planes in general are great bang for the buck. I've used a few L-N's, and I can't say that I see the benefit of the extra expense over the Veritas planes. I'd have a lot more of them if it weren't for the easy availability of old Stanleys. |
